Notes - James Newton Shofner, a retired Navy commander of Lincoln County, died last Saturday evening in the Veteran's Hospital in Nashville following a long illness. He was 69 years old. Graveside services were conducted last Wednesday morning at the Stones River National Cemetery in Murfreesboro with the Rev. James Cullipher, priest-in-charge of the St. Mary Magdaline Episcopal Church in Fayetteville, officiating. Ralston Chapel was in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Shofner, a native of Lincoln County, was the son of the late Eugene Forrest and Margaret Hill Shofner. He entered the Navy June 6, 1922, and graduated from the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, in 1926. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Commander and had lived in Lincoln County since his retirement. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Christine Rainey Shofner, Fayetteville; two sisters, Mrs. Wilson Sullivan, Fayetteville, and Mrs. Norman P. Ream, LaJolla, California.
