Notes - CHOCTAW PIONEER AT NINETY LIVING AMONG HER MEMORIES by Paris News Correspondent. HUGO, Okla. - It is thankfulness for good health, friends and a good home, as well as memories of much happiness that Mrs. Sophia Ann Fodge, Choctaw County pioneer, treasured on her 90th birthday here Thursday.. Among the numerous cards and gifts which she received was one which read, "May He lead you ever forward in his own mysterious way" and she declared "If it's the Lord's will, I'm ready to live to be 100!". "Granny" as she is familiarily known, was born on Dec. 4, 1857, in Carroll County, Tenn. and came to India(n) Territory 4 years ao with her late husband, James Fodge. After living in Cass County, texas for a time, the couple moved to Fort Towson, where Fodge farmed until he retired because of ill health. He died in 1937.. She kept house for an invalid son, Marvin, until his death five year(s) ago and she came to Hugo seven months to make her home with Mrs. V. B. Toile, a practical nurse at 411 S. 4th St. Only recently have her eyesight and hearing begun to fail.. Though the day was marred by the news of the death Wednesday of a brother, John Reynolds, Detroit, Texas, the last immediate member of her family, Mrs. Fodge was up early as usual. Dressed in a neat black dress and a gay-colored smock, she was ready to greet friends, many of whom came from Fort Towson to offer birthday greetings.. Mrs. Fodge is the sole survivor of a family of eight children, of whom she was the eldest.. As Mrs. Toile made preparations for an informal birthday party, augmented by a cake sent in by a neighbor, 90-year old Sophie Ann Fodge discussed with friends the world in which she has lived for so ong.. Conditions have improved a lot since she came to what was a wilderness back at the turn of the century. "Wickedness is not as bad now, there is more law and order, and young folks as a whole have improved." she says. Her only worry these days is about "all the trouble across the waters.". This was posted to the Eitel-Franks Family Website on June 6, 2009 by Sophia's great granddaughter, Janice Laman. Janice writes: This is a newspaper article that was in Grandma Daisy's things. It must have been published shortly after Dec. 4, 1947. We'v faced another turn of the century and still have the same worry about trouble across the waters. She died Feb. 14, 1949.
