451 | CHOCTAW PIONEER AT NINETY LIVING AMONG HER MEMORIES by Paris News Correspondent. HUGO, Okla. - It is thankfulness for good health, friends and a good home, as well as memories of much happiness that Mrs. Sophia Ann Fodge, Choctaw County pioneer, treasured on her 90th birthday here Thursday.. Among the numerous cards and gifts which she received was one which read, "May He lead you ever forward in his own mysterious way" and she declared "If it's the Lord's will, I'm ready to live to be 100!". "Granny" as she is familiarily known, was born on Dec. 4, 1857, in Carroll County, Tenn. and came to India(n) Territory 4 years ao with her late husband, James Fodge. After living in Cass County, texas for a time, the couple moved to Fort Towson, where Fodge farmed until he retired because of ill health. He died in 1937.. She kept house for an invalid son, Marvin, until his death five year(s) ago and she came to Hugo seven months to make her home with Mrs. V. B. Toile, a practical nurse at 411 S. 4th St. Only recently have her eyesight and hearing begun to fail.. Though the day was marred by the news of the death Wednesday of a brother, John Reynolds, Detroit, Texas, the last immediate member of her family, Mrs. Fodge was up early as usual. Dressed in a neat black dress and a gay-colored smock, she was ready to greet friends, many of whom came from Fort Towson to offer birthday greetings.. Mrs. Fodge is the sole survivor of a family of eight children, of whom she was the eldest.. As Mrs. Toile made preparations for an informal birthday party, augmented by a cake sent in by a neighbor, 90-year old Sophie Ann Fodge discussed with friends the world in which she has lived for so ong.. Conditions have improved a lot since she came to what was a wilderness back at the turn of the century. "Wickedness is not as bad now, there is more law and order, and young folks as a whole have improved." she says. Her only worry these days is about "all the trouble across the waters.". This was posted to the Eitel-Franks Family Website on June 6, 2009 by Sophia's great granddaughter, Janice Laman. Janice writes: This is a newspaper article that was in Grandma Daisy's things. It must have been published shortly after Dec. 4, 1947. We'v faced another turn of the century and still have the same worry about trouble across the waters. She died Feb. 14, 1949. | Reynolds, Sophia Ann Travis (I10160)

464 | Clyde B. Hogan, age 92, died peacefully in his sleep early Wednesday morning, October 3, 2007, at Crestpark Skilled Nursing facility in Marianna. He was born September 15, 1915 in Conway to Lou Lancaster Hogan and Andrew Jackson Hogan and was the husband of the late Emma Leila Hawkins Hogan, and father of the late Martha Delura Hogan. Preceding him in death were his brothers, Doyne Hogan and Milburn "Bo" Hogan, of Conway and a sister, Audrey Hogan Warner of Marianna. A graduate of Arkansas State Teachers' College in Conway, he later attended the University of Arkansas and got his master's degree at Oklahoma State University. Mr. Hogan came to Marianna in 1938 to establish a vocational agriculture program at T.A. Futrall High School. He taught Agriculture, was the high school principal and later Assistant Superintendent of Transportation for the Lee County School District for more than 42 years where he was greatly revered by several generations of students who took from his classroom much more than the subject matter he taught so well. Mr. Hogan was a member of the First Baptist Church in Marianna for nearly 70 years. He taught the Men's Sunday School Class, was a deacon and sang in the choir "to fill a seat." He was a member of Rotary for more than 60 years, with 57 years of perfect attendance. He received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award for outstanding contributions to Rotary International. He organized and led the Marianna Red Cross blood drive for 25 years and received the Chamber of Commerce "Citizen of the Year" award in 1992. He was a man of substance, an unselfish individual who had a genuine feeling for helping others. Especially those close to him understand how deeply he was loved and will be missed. His principles, sincerity and faith guided him well through life. His love, encouragement and gentle spirit touched many lives. He is survived by daughter Rebecca Hogan of Marianna and eight nieces and nephews: Paula Smartt of Knoxville, Tennessee; Dottie Harris of Fayetteville; Bob Hogan of Conway; Turner Hogan of Denton, Texas; Lyda Washburn of Little Rock; Jeanne Johnson of Vancouver, Washington; Joey Moody of Russellville and Lynn Poole of Heber Springs. Additionally, he is survived by three special friends who visited him regularly: Loyd Oxner, who reminisced about the good ole days; Suzy Keasler, who brought him root beer shakes and Pat Audirsch who "trimmed both the hairs on his bald head." The family will receive friends at Roller Funeral Home on Friday, October 5th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Marianna on Saturday, October 6, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow with a graveside service at Crestlawn Memorial in Conway, Arkansas at 4:00 p.m. The family asks that the First Baptist Church, Rotary Club and Community Foundation of Lee County be considered for any memorial. | Hogan, Clyde Brown (I9644)
