QUERY: The primary utility of DNA testing is to determine kinship in the paternal line for those being compared. The effectiveness is in comparing and evaluating the numbers with other DNA testers, in order for both to learn more about their surname family history. If your numbers are very different, then you are not that closely related. It is NOT particularly useful to take two unknowns and compare them to say, “Hey, I have no idea about the ancestry of either of these two, but they sure seem to be closely related.”
However, what I think IS useful is to take an unknown line and compare it to a hard-and-fast line, which has been extended one of more generations. Then one can DNA test and that will tell you how likely it is that your line comes from the hard-and-fast line. That will prevent spending a lot of time looking at the wrong line. So, in this way you are personally helping another REYNOLDS TO EXTEND THEIR GENEALOGY.
Keeping in mind that the only thing we can hope to show is that we and certain other living persons share a common male-line ancestor at some point in the past. Obviously, if you have copious genealogical data to prove all but one link in a chain of descent, you might find that the DNA evidence will tip the balance of "preponderance of evidence" in favor of that one elusive link.
For the majority, simply sharing a male-line ancestor is enough. One cannot arrive at any conclusions whatsoever from Y-DNA data, except to confirm or deny the possibility of a common ancestor, as expressed by Most Recent Common Ancestor calculations—anything more that that is delusional.
As for traditional genealogy, I would argue that if all one has were census and baptism and wills—then he/she really “knows” nothing about biological descent. If their genealogical interest is biological ancestry, then it seems to me that they are not reconfirming anything, but rather are taking scientific steps to prove what they think is the case is not purely the results of circumstantial evidence and coincidence only.
Combining the results of each person within A DNA PROJECT with traditional genealogical information enables researchers to hone in on geographical areas from which their families may have originated—thereby giving themselves new areas in which to explore traditional resources.
Now, if this isn't a common sense approach to finding out who's who, or who you are related to, or showing you if you are on the right track, then I can't see what else would be more important than a DNA test to focus and provide clues for family research.
Just think, if you had signed up for the Reynolds DNA Project when it began, then you might know who you are. We can't become what you need to be by remaining what you are.

QUERY: Apparently my great-great grandfather Julius Burton Reynolds left Clyde, Ohio in 1902 at age 39 and moved to Seattle, Washington with wife, 2 children, his aged parents and all 10 of his siblings. (with the exception of one brother who stayed behind to court but moved west following his marriage) I have some records that seem to indicate he left behind (in Ohio) two young children: Ruth I. Reynolds (who may have married Walter Neumann) and Edgar Reynolds. Both born between 1893-1895. Does anyone have any information about these two people?

The father William F. died 1859 at the age of 30 and is buried in family plot in Oakwood Cemetery, Mt. Kisco, NY. This plot was bought by Mary Jane Sands who was the wife of William Nelson Reynolds. William and Mary Jane lived in Litchfield, CT.

Both born in New Jersey I have dates of both 10/24/1816 or 10/25/1815. Find them in the 1870 census in Monroe Iowa along with son Oliver, James, Margaret & Emmila. I know they had children prior to that but were probably off on their own in 1870. My great great grandfather was James Alverd Reynolds born in Centerville, Indiana on May 01, 1853. He was married to Catherine Frances Booher of Iowa.
